A forex broker gives a retail trader access to currency pairs and, more often than not, to contracts for difference (CFDs) on indices, commodities and shares. Trading is leveraged: leverage magnifies both the possible profit and the loss, which is why most retail clients lose money on such accounts.

This section lists brokers with very different reputations: companies licensed by strict regulators, offshore platforms, and those that lost their licence or were shut down. For each one we show which licences it holds and whether they were checked in the register, where it is registered, and what clients say about withdrawals, spreads and support.

The main thing to check before your first deposit: whether the broker appears in your national regulator's register, and whether the legal entity named on its website matches the one in that register.
